RLI Women’s John Whalley, is preparing to make his first trip to Ireland as Head Coach, where Women’s trials will take place this Saturday 14th August at Tullamore RFC.
Whalley will arrive in Dublin on Friday evening, before Saturday’s session, where he will see the best that Ireland has to offer before selecting his second half of his 40-player train on squad.
Speaking to RLI, Whalley said: “Myself and the coaching team will be putting the girls through core skill with lots of small sided games it will be fun but challenging but I’m looking forward to seeing the girls express themselves.
“I’m very impressed with the numbers that we have seen registered. We are running with three 90-minute trial slots starting at 9:30am and the final session will finish at 4pm. The slots have filled up nicely, which I’m not surprised by, and I cannot wait to see what options I have for the International side.”
The UK trials were completed a few weeks ago and a 20-player squad selected from those on offer. “I’m very happy with the progress we are making in the UK, we have some very good quality within the group, I am looking to add to that this weekend and gain some really healthy competition for places.
“I’ve been very impressed by the standard of the Championship in Ireland having watched a few of the games, teams have gelled very quickly and they work very hard for each other. With it being their first season and the quality it already has, it is great for the future of RLI.”
He added: ”I would like to thank Tullamore for allowing us to use there fantastic facilities. I’m really looking forward to getting my feet on the ground and meeting the girls, this is the start of something very special and it’s great to be a part of it.”
